Final stop on the winter boules safari

Four teams turned out for the last of the winter doubles events, held this time at Trengilly Wartha, Constantine.

We had hailstones, rain and occasional sun, plus an undulating surface that varied from hard in places, allowing the chunky gravel to divert an unwary boule, to very soft.

Winners this time were Mark Hypponen and Dominik Ellwanger, with two wins and a points difference of +11 from the three games played.

Pete Lynas and Bill Kingdon also had two wins, but narrow margins - 13-12 and 13-11 - gave them a points difference of -6.

Colin 'Boot' Booth and Graeme Kirkham had one win (-2), with Ray Beresford and Emmanuelle Juan also on one win with -3.

The boules safari events have been enjoyable as a way of keeping the arm swinging through the winter months but also an opportunity to play a greater range of surfaces than we experience with our usual club venues.

The Kernow calendar for the coming season will be out shortly: next event will be the traditional start-of-season Easter Egg Shoot on 14 April. More details soon.

Green jacks for St Patrick's Day!

The final stop on the Cornwall winter boules safari will be the pétanque terrain at the Trengilly Wartha pub, Constantine, on St Patrcik's Day, next Sunday, 17 March.

This is a doubles competition, open to all, with three games. Registration 10.30-10.45, start of play as soon as possible thereafter.

Pints of Guinness, meals and snacks will be available from the pub: order food before 14.00 at the latest. Don't bring your own food to the pub, please.

There is only space for two games at one time at Trengilly, so please let Graeme know (email or 07794 866225) if you are intending to play. The intention is for doubles but if necessary we can reorganise into triples.

Kernow AGM tomorrow - doubles event cancelled

The weather forecast for tomorrow (3 March) as Storm Freya passes through is 90 per cent chance of rain at 11.00, 12.00 and 13.00, gusts up to 45 knots and feeling like 7 degrees! Not ideal weather for petanque, so the the doubles games we had planned before the AGM are now cancelled.

The AGM will go ahead as planned, starting at 2.30. Hope to see you there.

Please note: if you have ordered a Star roast roll for lunch during the games tomorrow and won't be there, please remember to cancel with the pub.

News from the Kernow AGM

A big thank you to all those who braved the weather to come to the Kernow Pétanque Annual General Meeting on Sunday (3 March).

Cornwall region president Graeme Kirkham gave a brief overview of the past year, but focused on the crucial task of promoting pétanque in Cornwall and finding new players.

Pete English gave his Treasurer's report, noting that the region had a smaller balance at the end of the year than at the beginning but had invested in new kit and equipment and had paid for new surfacing for the terrain at the Star Inn.

Playing Officer Andrew Jarvis listed the winners of events in 2018 and outlined the region's achievements in inter-regional events. He also went through the draft calendar for 2019 which will be distributed to players and posted online shortly.

The meeting approved a number of amendments to the Kernow Petanque Association constitution and members also voted to adopt a new Data Privacy policy for the region produced by the region's Secretary, Bill Kingdon.

There were no nominations for officers' posts and the whole of the 2018 Management Committee was re-elected en bloc.

Graeme will be contacting members in the next day or so to check their availability for the three major inter-regional competitions on the calendar: the annual Cornwall V Devon match will take place at a venue in Cornwall on 9 June, a three-way contest between Kernow, Devon and Great Western regions is set for 21 July, and the Pétanque England inter-regional weekend is at Hayling Island, Hampshire, over the weekend of 14-15 September

Don't forget: Kernow Petanque AGM

The Kernow Petanque AGM takes place this coming Sunday, 3 March, at 2.30pm at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day.

There will be a three-round doubles competition before the meeting: registration 10.30-10.45, start of play approx 11.00.

You can order your Star roast rolls in advance on 01209 820242 - please don't bring your own food or refreshments to the pub.

If you haven't yet paid your 2019 subscription, please note that only paid up members of Kernow Petanque Association can vote at the AGM or stand for office. You can pay your subscription online via the Petanque England website or pay the Kernow Membership Secretary, Susan Williamson, prior to the meeting.

Look forward to seeing you.
