Cornwall Shooting title

2011 Shooting Champion - Peter LynasThe new Kernow Petanque shooting champion is Peter Lynas, of Trengilly Wartha Petanque Club, Constantine. The shooting competition was held during the Kernow President's Event on 14 August at the Star Inn, St Day. Eight players took part. A pointing competition was also held, won by Sam Heslop of Falmouth. The main proceedings of the day were a melee, with Roy Pemberton of St Columb Major running out the winner. Everyone got prizes!

2011 Cornwall Triples champions

The new Cornwall Triples champions and holders of the Skinners trophy are Simon Penna, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan of the Treleigh Arms Pétanque Club (TAPS). Roy and Rob were both members of the winning team in 2010. The Triples competition took place at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on Sunday 7 August. Turnout this year was poor, with only six teams competing. The standard of play was mostly very high, however, and the atmosphere good humoured, despite heavy rain during the afternoon. Runners-up in the competition were a team from Tregony Pétanque Club: Dave and Rosemary Piggin and Susan Williamson. In third place was a team from the North Inn, Pendeen, in west Cornwall, Colin 'Boot' Booth, Peter Downing and Ray Beresford. This was a very good result from a club which was only formed at the beginning of this year.

Cornwall summer league update

The Kernow Pétanque summer league competition is now well under way with a total of 14 triples taking part in two leagues. The top teams in each league will play each other for the trophy at the end of the season. Current front-runners in league A are TAPS (Simon Penna, Roy Pemberton, Rob Sullivan), with 16 points from three games and a points difference advantage of +89. Second are the Rams (Wendy Booker, Peter Gliddon and Kate Herrick) with 10 points from two games and a points difference of +45. In league B the leaders are Grams (Robert Herrick, Mike Hill and Graeme Kirkham), with 14 points from four games and a points difference of +46, followed by Piggin Hell with 13 points from three games (+32 points). The next round is scheduled for 10 July.

Third year running for Singles champion

The Cornwall regional Singles championship has been won for the third year in succession by Steven Boyne. Currently living in Devon, Steven keeps up his links with Cornwall region and returned to take part in the event, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on 17 July. This time he took the title by the narrowest of margins, beating runner-up Simon Penna of Falmouth 13-12 in the final. Winner of the Plate competition was Rob Sullivan of St Columb Major, who beat Lena Daddow of Carharrack in the final. Despite Cornwall this year having hit its highest membership total for more than ten years, turnout for the event was disappointing, with many players put off by a dismal weather forecast. Fingers are now crossed for better weather for the regional Triples competition, to be held on Sunday 7 August.

Cornwall - Devon match

The annual Cornwall v Devon match took place at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on 12 June. Unfortunately, because of the very inclement weather (it poured!), a number of teams pulled out. The final result was a 5-4 victory to Devon.
