Club nights at the Star, St Day

The new Vogue Petanque Club will be meeting on Thursday evenings, from 6.30pm. The club is at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day. All welcome, including beginners and young players. Boules available to borrow. Contact Andrew and Sarah Jarvis for more details (see the Contact us page).

North Inn points the way

Despite a cold, windy day with little sign of Spring, the traditional Easter Egg Shoot season-opener for Cornwall's boules players attracted a near record turnout of 15 pairs, including two visiting teams from Devon.

Held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 7 April, the event was a striking success for the North Inn Pétanque Club, Pendeen, with two teams from the club facing each other in the final. Overall winners were Pete 'PD' Downing and Barney Knapp, with Colin 'Boot' Booth and Ray Beresford taking second place.

The losing semi-finalists were Devon visitors John and Rose Thatcher and Tregony PC's Susan Williamson with - playing for the first time in several years - Rachel Ellis.

The plate competition was won by another Devon pair, Peter and Sue Smith, who beat Tregony's Graeme Kirkham and a new player in his first competition, Cliff Tunnicliffe.

Next event on the calendar is the Cornwall regional Doubles competition on 21 April. Entry is restricted to paid up members of Kernow Pétanque: memberships can be paid on the day.

Cornwall (more-or-less) on top in three-way event

The annual three-way competition between Cornwall, Devon and Great Western regions ended with a narrow win for the Cornwall squad. The final scores were 15 wins to Kernow, 14 to Devon and 11 for Great Western.

The outcome wasn't quite that simple, however, in that Cornwall and Great Western both fielded seven teams, Devon only six. Low temperatures and a biting easterly wind made the start-of season event something of an ordeal for the players and the competition was limited to four rounds rather than the planned five.

The result turned on the last game of the day, between the Cornwall 5 team - Andrew and Sarah Jarvis and Pete English - and Devon 5: Ged and Ann Barton and Peter Smith. The Cornwall team had a bad start but came back from 9-1 down to win 13-12!

Three Cornwall teams won three out of the four games, with Cornwall 2 - Robert Herrick, Dave Piggin and Graeme Kirkham - narrowly losing their final game against Devon 1 (Franck Depreaux, Thierry Hacq and Rob Brealey); they had been leading through the game but a loss of focus in the last couple of ends cost them the result. Cornwall 5 also won three games, as did Cornwall 7 (Lena Daddow, Barbara Brown and Pete Lynas).

The other Kernow teams were: Cornwall 1 (Hugh Appleton, Roy Pemberton and Simon Penna), 2 wins; Cornwall 3 (Colin 'Boot' Booth, Pete 'PD' Downing and Barney Knapp), 1 win; Cornwall 4 (Rosemary Piggin, Paul Rundle and Susan Williamson), 1 win; Cornwall 6 (Wendy Booker, Peter Gliddon and Kate Herrick), 2 wins.

Thanks to John Thatcher and his team for organising the event and to Cary Bush for umpiring - no fun on cold day!
