Cornwall at the 2011 Inter-Regionals

Some very enjoyable pétanque, a very wet weekend and a rather disappointing final result were the fruits of Cornwall’s trip up the M5 to the English Pétanque Association Inter-Regional competition at Brean Sands, Somerset, during the weekend of 17-18 September.

For the past three years the Cornwall region has combined with Devon to enter the Championship contest but for the 2011 event Kernow Pétanque took a squad of four teams into the Challenge. The final outcome for Cornwall was 21 wins from 48 games played over the two days, earning fifth place out of the seven teams in Division 2. At the top of the Division 2 table was Isle of Wight, with 31 wins from 48, followed by Great Western and Devon, each with 27.

The most successful Kernow team was no 3 – Rosemary Piggin, Paul Rundle and Susan Williamson – who won seven of their 12 games. Team 1, made up of Robert Herrick, Graeme Kirkham and Dave Piggin, won six of 12. Team 2 (Hugh Appleton, Simon Penna and Rob Sullivan) had five wins and team 4 – new players Andrew and Sarah Jarvis, on their first visit to Brean, with team-mate Roy Pemberton – picked up a creditable three. Team manager, through rain and shine, was Kate Herrick.

Now its practice, practice, practice: the road to the 2012 event starts here.

Cornwall summer league results

It was a damp finale to the Cornwall summer (huh!) league, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 4 September. By the end of the event much of the terrain was under water and all the players thoroughly drenched! The top two places in the finals were a re-run of the Cornwall triples competition, with a contest between Simon Penna, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan of the Treleigh Arms and Tregony Pétanque Club members Dave and Rosemary Piggin and Susan Williamson. Once again, Simon, Roy and Rob came out winners. Simon also won the Captains' competition. In third place were Robert Herrick, of the Rising Sun club, Altarnun, and Tregony players Mike Hill and Graeme Kirkham, with Wendy Booker, Peter Gliddon and Kate Herrick taking fourth. The Cornwall winter league starts soon - watch this space for details. This is an open competition and if you are interested in taking part please get in touch with Playing Officer Robert Herrick via the Contact Us page.

Cornwall Shooting title

2011 Shooting Champion - Peter LynasThe new Kernow Petanque shooting champion is Peter Lynas, of Trengilly Wartha Petanque Club, Constantine. The shooting competition was held during the Kernow President's Event on 14 August at the Star Inn, St Day. Eight players took part. A pointing competition was also held, won by Sam Heslop of Falmouth. The main proceedings of the day were a melee, with Roy Pemberton of St Columb Major running out the winner. Everyone got prizes!

Tregony players do well in Cornwall doubles

The Kernow Pétanque 2011 doubles competition was won by Graeme Kirkham and Susan Williamson, both of Tregony Pétanque Club. Eight teams took part in the event, which took place on Sunday 28 August at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day. This is the third year in a row that Graeme, President of the Cornwall region, has been a member of the winning pair and he and Susan previously won the competition together in 2007.   Runners-up were Robert Herrick of the Rising Sun Pétanque Club, Altarnun, and Mike Hill of Falmouth, another member of the Tregony club.   The Plate competition was won by Andrew and Sarah Jarvis of Truro, also members of Tregony, with Kate Herrick of the Rising Sun club and Paul Rundle of St Austell, another Tregony player, in second place. 2011 Cornwall Triples champions

The new Cornwall Triples champions and holders of the Skinners trophy are Simon Penna, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan of the Treleigh Arms Pétanque Club (TAPS). Roy and Rob were both members of the winning team in 2010. The Triples competition took place at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on Sunday 7 August. Turnout this year was poor, with only six teams competing. The standard of play was mostly very high, however, and the atmosphere good humoured, despite heavy rain during the afternoon. Runners-up in the competition were a team from Tregony Pétanque Club: Dave and Rosemary Piggin and Susan Williamson. In third place was a team from the North Inn, Pendeen, in west Cornwall, Colin 'Boot' Booth, Peter Downing and Ray Beresford. This was a very good result from a club which was only formed at the beginning of this year.
