Success for Cornwall team at men's international qualifiers

A Cornwall team came out on top at the regional qualifying event held as part of the process of selecting the next English Petanque Association men’s international team. The team – Michael Hill, Graeme Kirkham and Dave Piggin, all of Tregony Pétanque Club – won all five of their games during the competition.

Six teams took part in the event, held at the Isca Petanque Club, Exeter, on Sunday 17 April. Two were from Cornwall, two from Devon and two entered from the Marches Petanque Club in Herefordshire.

The second Cornwall triple – Robert Herrick, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan – came third in the competition, winning four games.

One of the Herefordshire teams took second place and they and the leading Cornwall team go forward to the next stage of the competition, in which the final 32 teams in the qualifying process will compete. This will be in Nottingham on 22 May.

Great start for 2011 season

The sun shone, spring was definitely springing and nearly 40 boules players turned out for Kernow Pétanque’s traditional start of season open event, the Easter Egg Shoot, held on 10 April at the Star Inn, St Day.

Overall winners, in a repeat of their success at last year’s event, were The Three Rs: Robert Herrick, of the Rising Sun Petanque Club, Altarnun, and Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan, both of the Treleigh Arms Petanque Society (TAPS), Redruth.

Runners-up were a pick-up team made up of Lena Daddow of Carharrack and Barbara Brown, Graeme Kirkham and Paul Rundle, all of Tregony Pétanque Club.

Winners of the Plate competition were three players from the newly formed club at the North Inn, Pendeen, in west Cornwall. The three – Pam Downing, Marcus Thurley and Delia Treseder – all started to play pétanque only this year.

New petanque club in west Cornwall

A new pétanque club has been formed at the North Inn, Pendeen, and has already attracted enough interest to organise its own summer league for local players and enter two teams for the Kernow Pétanque summer league.

Club members have created two new pistes at the rear of the pub, which is in the middle of the historic mining village of Pendeen, located on the north coast road between St Just and St Ives.

Officers of the new club, which has already affiliated to Kernow Pétanque and the EPA, are Colin Booth, President, Delia Treseder, Secretary, and Ray Beresford, Treasurer. Information on the club is available from the North Inn on 01736 788417.
