Two new officers for Kernow Petanque committee

The Kernow Petanque AGM on Sunday 5 March saw two new officers join the region's management committee. Pete English (North Inn PC) steps in as Treasurer and Andy Rose (Rising Sun PC) becomes the new Regional Umpire.

Kate Herrick (Rising Sun) stepped down as Treasurer after four years in the post and Sarah Jarvis gave up the post of Youth Development Officer after a similar term. Both were warmly thanked for all they have contributed.

The meeting was not well attended but agreed that the main priorities for the coming year must be promotion and recruitment - membership is currently at a six-year low and there is an urgent need to attract new players who are willing to take part in the major competitions.

Other matters discussed included the format for the summer league competition. It was decided that the successful inter-club contest would run again in 2017, enabling those taking part to play on a variety of different terrains.

Andy Rose gave a brief run-through of the important changes to the rules which have come into play this year.

Playing Officer Andrew Jarvis (Vogue PC) also outlined the calendar for 2017 which will be distributed and posted shortly.

The officers elected were: President: Pete Lynas (Tregony PC); Vice-President: Colin Booth (North Inn); Secretary: Susan Williamson (Tregony); Treasurer: Pete English (North Inn); Playing officer: Andrew Jarvis (Vogue); Membership Secretary: Graeme Kirkham (Tregony); Youth Development Officer: post vacant; Promotion Officer: post to be shared by Vice-President and Membership Secretary; Regional Umpire: Andy Rose (Rising Sun).

A number of members turned out for the melée held before the AGM, cut short from the planned event because of the dismal weather forecast. As it happened the rain and hail stopped, the wind died down and the sun came out! Winner of the three-round contest was Susan Williamson (Tregony PC), with Roy Pemberton (Coaching Inn) as runner-up.
