Winter league winners

The final round of the Cornwall winter petanque league once again produced a last-minute surprise. Ray Beresford and Bill Kingdon (North Inn) topped the table all the way through through the competition but in the final round were just pipped at the post for the top place by Pete English (North Inn) and Drew Jarvis (Vogue PC).

The final took place at the Star Inn on Sunday 12 March, with three teams competing. In the first game, Pete and Drew beat Ray and Bill 13-7, to leave these two teams level on 7 wins and 25 match points (match points are awarded for 'good wins' - victories to 0, 1, 2 or 3).

The second game was the turning point, with Pete and Drew defeating Mark Hypponen (Tregony PC) and Eric Guy 13-0 and so going ahead on 8 wins and 30 match points. That meant Ray and Bill had to do the same to level for first place. They won but didn't get a second fanny against Mark and Eric so also finished on 8 wins but with only 28 match points.

Third team member for Mark and Eric was Pete Lynas (Tregony); Sarah Jarvis was third for Drew and Pete, but was unable to play in the final round because of injury
