Boules in Penzance

Eight players turned out for the 14 January leg of the winter boules safari, held in the fine setting of St Anthony's Gardens, Penzance: palm trees, a fountain and Mount's Bay and St Michael's Mount in the background.

The surface was . . . challenging. Thin gravel over very uneven tarmac with plenty of biggish stones coming through, lightly topped with patches of grass and weeds and liberally sprinkled with quantities of dog mess of varying freshness.

After three timed games two pairs had two wins and a points difference of +4. Mark Hypponen and Roy Pemberton just took the top spot, because they beat Arnaud Ruetsch and Richard Lapworth when the two teams played each other in the first round.

Also making an appearance, though not in the results table, were Andrew Jarvis and Graeme Kirkham, and Pete English and Andy Rose.
