Last round of the winter doubles and new officers for Kernow Petanque

The final round of the 2017-18 Winter Doubles series took place at the Star Inn, St Day, yesterday, 4 March. This was a much smoother (and greener) roly-poly surface than most of those played during earlier rounds.

There were five teams and after four games the winners were (open the envelope) . . . . Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony), with four wins (+19). Second were Andy Rose (Rising Sun) and Pete English (North Inn), on three wins (+14). Third place went to Mark Hypponen (North Inn) and Dominic Ellwanger: two wins (+3).

The competition was followed by the Kernow AGM. Pete Lynas stepped down after three years as President of Kernow region; Graeme Kirkham was elected as President for the coming year. A huge thank you to Pete for all he has done for the region during his term of office.

Bill Kingdon (North Inn) will take over as Secretary and Susan Williamson is now Membership Secretary for the region: get your 2018 subs to her as soon as possible!

The meeting was attended by 11 members. There was discussion of the format for the Winter Doubles event - going on tour and trying a variety of different playing surfaces was generally agreed to have been successful - and of the 2018 Summer League.

It was agreed that this year each club taking part in the League would play both home and away matches against each of the other clubs. The format would be three timed triples games, which will allow rounds to be played on weekday evenings if preferred. Each game must be played during the month specified in the League programme. Full details will be available soon.

Playing Officer Andrew Jarvis also announced that he has agreement for some refurbishment of the Star playing surface - watch that space!

Finally, this year Kernow will again be entering a squad for the Challenge competition at Petanque England's Inter-regional event. This takes place at Hayling Island in September. This comes after two years in which it has not been possible to take part as a region - looking good!!
