Good win for Kernow in annual Devon derby

Kernow Petanque ran out winners from the annual contest against Devon by an impressive 17 wins to 8.

On a steamy hot Sunday (10 June) at Isca Petanque Club's terrain in Exeter the visitors took four of the five rounds played.

Three Kernow teams had four wins from the day. Most successful were Kernow 3 (Pete English, Andrew Jarvis and Paul Lumley), with a final points difference of +24. Close behind were Kernow 1 - Dion Beechey, Colin 'Boot' Booth, Andy Rose and Rob Sullivan - with +22 and Kernow 2 - Lena Daddow, Pete Lynas and Paul Rundle - on +17.

Kernow 5 - Susan Williamson, new Kernow player Chris Mason and Graeme Kirkham - were slow getting started in the morning but had three wins during the afternoon with a final points difference of -4. Eric Guy, Sue Hardy, Mark Hypponen and Bill Kingdon made up Kernow 4 and came in with two wins from their first two games of the day (-18).

To be fair to the Devon squad there were a number of tight games that could have gone the other way and a number of 'new faces' playing, taking part in an inter-regional event for the first time.

Thanks from Cornwall to Devon president Ged Barton for his organisation, to the Isca PC team for setting up, to Mike Pegg for umpiring - and setting up the special Olympic bid photograph - and to the Isca catering team for a good lunch.

Roll on the three-way competition between Kernow, Devon and Great Western regions to be held at Isca on 22 July.
